There are few plants that have retained their popularity
with gardeners for as long as the fuchsia. From their
introduction from South America in the late 18th
century they soon became firm favourites with the Victorian
plants-men, presumably because they are easy to grow,
propagate and develop new varieties.
With their distinctive flower shape and colour pallet
ranging from strong purples through to soft pinks and white,
there are now thousands and thousands of varieties and
cultivars available. Fuchsias can be used in virtually all
areas of the garden; from containers and hanging baskets
through to formal standard specimens that look great on the
patio. Fuchsias are great as hardy shrubs to brighten up a
border or hedge and they also make fine plants for bonsai.
To celebrate this wonderful, versatile plant, Eggesford
Gardens is holding its’ annual Fuchsia and Pelargonium Fair
on 12th and 13th July. There will be
hundreds of varieties on show and for sale along with expert
advice and tips for success from specialist growers.
Fuchsia specialists, including Sundial Nursery, will be
exhibiting this year and will be offering many rare and
unusual varieties.
The event runs from 11am to 4pm each day and entry is free.
The garden centre and restaurant are open as normal.
